Where to stay in Kyoto: Kyoto Station, downtown or Higashiyama?

Choose a Kyoto base around the journeys you will make each day. The station area, downtown and Higashiyama offer different starting points; compare the actual address and room as carefully as the neighbourhood.

Kyoto Station · Arrival and onward travel

Compare the station area if you arrive with luggage or have several rail journeys. Check which side of the station the property is on and the walking route to your platform or bus stop. A station-area stay can simplify logistics without putting every temple within walking distance.

Downtown · Keep evenings easy

For a stay centred on restaurants, shops and river walks, compare the downtown area around Shijo and Kawaramachi. Map the station that serves your actual route, not the closest station name alone. Read room details carefully: a convenient location says nothing about room size, sound insulation or the number of beds.

Higashiyama · Check access as well as atmosphere

A traditional-looking street can be appealing for early walks, but inspect the last part of the journey with luggage. Ask about stairs, lift access and taxi drop-off when relevant. For a ryokan, confirm whether meals, bathing facilities and bedding arrangements are included in your selected room rate. Compare the total stay and cancellation deadline.
