Japan in 10 days: a Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka itinerary

This ten-day route starts in Tokyo and continues to Kyoto and Osaka. Treat it as a set of bases you can adapt to your flights and interests, with enough space to avoid changing hotels just to follow a checklist.

Suggested route · adapt to opening days, weather and your arrival time.

Days 1–4 · Tokyo as your first base

Use the first day for arrival and a light neighbourhood walk. Follow with eastern Tokyo around Asakusa and a separate western-city day. Use the fourth day for Fuji, Nikko or more Tokyo according to your interests and weather. Do not add both day trips simply to complete a list.

Days 5–7 · Move to Kyoto, then slow down

Treat day five as a travel day, with only a modest activity after check-in. Use the next two days for eastern Kyoto and either Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama. Check the actual train stations and hotel luggage arrangements. Leave room for a favourite temple, a seated meal or a quiet hour beside the river.

Days 8–10 · Osaka and your departure

Move to Osaka if it serves your return flight or chosen activities. Explore Namba and Dotonbori, then choose a second Osaka day or Nara. Day ten depends on your flight. If flying from Tokyo, include the return to Tokyo explicitly; do not count it as a full sightseeing day in Osaka.

Make the route work for you

With children or heavy luggage, consider keeping one Kansai base and commuting for nearby visits. Compare the extra rail travel with the inconvenience of another check-in. Add the exact intercity fares before buying a rail pass, and keep one unbooked half-day. This is a flexible plan, not an operator’s timed package.
